Vito Scaletta

The prudent, cool, calm main protagonist of the story, the son of Maria Scaletta, a caring, pious mother who encourages him to live an honest life, and Antonio Scaletta, a father who has fallen into alcoholism and Vito does not like him very much because of this and the debts he has to take care of. He has an older sister Francesca, whom he cannot tolerate, and a best friend Joe, who is the complete opposite of Vito. He was born in 1925 in San Martino, Sicily.

From a young age, together with Joe, they get into all sorts of trouble, which as they get older, turn into thefts and later murders. Vito usually has the misfortune of being caught by the police, which in one case results in him being drafted into the war in Europe, specifically in Sicily, and in another, directly in prison. Thanks to Joe, he becomes part of the respected mafia families that rule Empire Bay. Due to the desire to make big money, Vito and Joe get involved in drug dealing and, through a combination of various events, they start a war between the gangs, which turns their lives upside down.

Vito has lived in several different homes during his "career". Originally, when he was still a child, after arriving in the USA, he and his family lived in an apartment in the palisade in the Hunters Point neighborhood. Later, he and his family lived in a modest apartment, located in one of the relatively neglected apartment buildings in Little Italy. However, after returning from the war, he decided that he had to find his own place to live. He often stayed in Joe's apartment, but after returning from prison, he arranged for him to rent an apartment in Uptown. Later, Vito would have his own house Villa Scaletta, which the Irish would set on fire in retaliation. He would eventually end up in Marty's apartment in Oyster Bay, which he called a dirty hole.
